Cam was taught the craft of building by his father from a young age, and undertook his apprenticeship after leaving school. He went on to gain valuable experience working with reputable building companies in Hamilton, Christchurch and Auckland where he learnt the importance of quality craftsmanship and workmanship, which has evidently been passed on to his new company Nixon Homes.

How would your mates describe you, in 3 words?
Hardworking, energetic, humorous
Why did you become a builder, did you always know you’d be one?
Dad didn’t really give me another option!
In all seriousness, I always really enjoyed working with my hands. I didn’t really enjoy school but really enjoyed working with my dad on the weekends, so decided to leave and take up a building apprenticeship.
Dad was also a builder at one stage in life and was always building our own homes, so I was pretty much used as free labour from a young age! He gave me a good base knowledge about how to build and would always focus on the finishing details and making sure you work to the highest quality. That is something I have really held onto throughout my building career.
Who’s idea was it to start a family run home building business and why?
It was my idea… I was always keen to start a building company in my hometown, Hamilton! Mike and I had built a house in Christchurch when I lived there, so it was kind of a natural progression to start a business together when I moved home.
What’s your favourite part about building a home for someone?
I really enjoy working with the future homeowners and seeing them enjoy their dream home come together. When people build a house, they normally live in it for a lot of years, so it is a really big part of their life. I feel you really get a personal connection when you build someone’s home, which is long lasting. I often keep in contact with owners of previous houses I’ve built, I still keep in touch with one of my clients John, who’s amazing cliffside home I rebuilt after the earthquakes in Christchurch. It was great getting to know him and his wife during the build, and I often check in with him to make sure he’s still looking after his home haha!
People can find you at your Show Home in Hamilton most weekends, what’s your favourite part of the home and why?
I love the open plan living with the huge corner sliding doors! It really creates perfect indoor/outdoor flow. It’s a great way to relax or entertain in summer and it feels like the outside deck is part of the living area, making it feel so much bigger!
We are really happy with and proud of the Show Home! It’s a bit of a shame no one gets to live in it to be honest. It’s always exciting and encouraging when we get people coming through to check it out and they end up really liking it.

As I am the single point of contact from sales to handing over the keys, I really feel that the customer gets a personal service not available at other building companies.
